Integrated Bio Energy Facility in Central Kalimantan

Overview

Building on its proven track record, STC is leading a consortium of international and local organizations all seeking to establish comprehensive a Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS) in the region of Central Kalimantan. This project has been undertaken with support from the Energy and Environment Partnership of Indonesia, an initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finland.

 

Within this project, STC is continuing its partnerships with Maris Projects BV, a Dutch company specializing in POME biogas capture and bioremediation with microalgae production; and PT Forest Carbon, an Indonesian GIS company committed to forest conservation. For additional expertise on biocharcoal production, community training, and eco-product marketing, Yayasan Dian Tama and PT Dian Niaga Jakarta have also joined the consortium.

 

Strategy

The province of Central Kalimantan ranks 4th in Indonesia, after Riau, North Sumatra, and Jambi, for total area under palm oil cultivation; it also contains a significant coconut production sector. Within the palm industry, smallholders constitute approximately 10% of the total, with no state-owned enterprises (SOEs) established in the region. The significant expansion of palm oil plantations in Indonesia has generated major concerns about the industry’s impacts on habitat loss for endangered species, the reduction of biodiversity, and spiralling GHG emissions.

This project seeks to advance Indonesia’s incipient bioenergy industry in order to contribute directly to Indonesia’s legislated commitment (Presidential Regulation No. 61 Year 2011) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% while also advancing rural economic development. STC seeks to devise a comprehensive model to construct a multiple waste stream biocharcoal production facility which captures 25,000 tonnes of CO2. Also, the provided technical training will increase the capacity of upstream biomass suppliers in order to secure 54,000-128,000 metric tonnes of biomass as feedstock for the facility.

 

Technology

For this project, STC will utilize a mix of cutting edge technology with proven strategies to engage rural communities. Yayasan Dian Tama has worked with hundreds of communities across Kalimantan to conduct training workshops on biocharcoal production from coconut waste products. Training methods may vary from simple techniques directed at individuals on basic biocharcoal drum kiln construction to community level training on how to develop larger scale, in-ground kilns. Communities will have the opportunity to partner with Dian Niaga Jakarta to deliver their eco-products to local and international markets.

Low grade biocharcoal or residual coconut biomass will be collected along with waste biomass products from the palm industry: palm kernel shells, empty fruit bunches, mesocarp fibres, and palm fronds. These products will be used to produce clean, sustainable energy which offsets the need for fossil fuels. Overall, solid biomass will be converted to energy with appropriately sized gasification technology.

In general, the primary barrier to sustainable energy production from biomass facilities is introducing comprehensive supply chain management systems capable of ensuring that feedstock supplies are resilient. Consequently, the application of GIS technology shall be integrated with an interactive Google Earth tool to monitor land use change, calculate GHG emissions savings, and optimize feedstock flows. Overall, the concept is a unique, innovative approach that may be replicated across Indonesia.
